In this short film Mikyako talks about disliking the town she lived in when she was younger, Yokosuka. She felt an urgency to get out so she started photography because she felt that through photography she could ascertain her origins. She felt a strong dislike for Yokosuka because it turned into an American naval base and full of wounds. She took pictures of these traces and was attracted to these negative beauties.
Mikyako stated, "you can take photographs of places where time is stored and compressed". This is essentially what she has done, the start of her photographic was about. A lot of her images are of shadows of her and old houses/places that she used to live in. Her series have a social message and "not a record but a created reality ". Mikyako believes that taking photographs is a straightforward action but the dark room process is a lot more conceptual, physical and psychological. She loved seeing the world she captured emerge right in front of her and a "sense of being in a dialogue with the world". |
